At this celebration, hosted by Chancellor J. Keith Motley on Thursday, April 30, a pilot database of faculty research was unveiled, and Prof. Mary Oleskiewicz, who has worked extensively in Berlin with 18th-century manuscripts, and Prof. Lynnell Thomas, who studies New Orleans tourism, shared their recent research on the histories and cultures of two cities.

Loan debt affects individuals, and not just the economy at large. Research shows that student loan debt greatly affects students, influencing what they do both in and out of college.

If you want answers to questions about student loans, debt, and students’ post-college job choices, then National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is a good place to start.

Using the LexisNexis Database

Are you interested in learning more about a particular company? Whether your interest comes from academics, financial investment, or curiosity, the database LexisNexis can help you out. LexisNexis is a rich database for business research, but its richness isn’t limited to professionals, as all UMass Boston students have full access to the database. And with retirement assets often tied to the stock market, nearly everybody has something to gain in knowing where their money is.

So what do you do if you need to find out information on a company? Get your hands on a company dossier! A company dossier is like an abbreviated biography of a company, and provides concise, useful information. Having a working knowledge of a company is useful for many reasons. Two major areas of interest are company health and company operations. What does the company do? How does the company do what it does? These are questions that can be answered by using company dossiers.

UMB Bookstore: Buy and sell textbooks right here at the Campus Center. The bookstore orders textbooks for UMB courses. The UMB Bookstore offers both new and (discounted) used textbooks, and has a buyback program for used textbooks.

Course Reserves: Some course material, including textbooks, may have been placed on reserve by your instructor. Check the library's print & e-reserves collection to see if your textbook is "on reserve".

Getting Published: Expanding Your Audience

In this research challenge a UMB professor who has published articles in the Journal of Business Ethics is now looking for new journals for his current research papers. The professor specializes (among other areas) in scholarship focused at the intersection of Chinese and Western business ethics. At this time he is looking for new venues to reach different and wider audiences with his scholarship. He asked for library suggestions for ways to identify journals that might be interested in articles covering Confucianism and business ethics.

Who Would’a Known?

Sure, we’re in a financial crisis, but who would’ve known this was going to happen? Would economists have known, even a couple of years back? Would the president have known? As students we’re taught to be proactive and to question the experts, so let’s question them.

But how, as students, are we able to question the experts? Let’s start by what we know about the experts. Economists are hired, both in the private and public sectors, to protect financial assets. So if we want to find out what economists are doing, we have to find them in their hideout: the American Economic Association. In their hideout there’s a database called EconLit. As students at UMass Boston, we have full access to EconLit, and therefore full access to what is going on in the economy.

Zotero is a Firefox browser extension that lets you collect, manage, and cite a multitude of resources while surfing the Internet. Zotero "senses" citation information available in a website, PDF, book, article, or other web object, and allows you to save this information with one quick click. You can than add additional notes or tags to the captured information. In this way, you can gather research from many different sources, keep it organized, and then export right into Microsoft Word (or another word processor) when you are ready to type your paper.
