At this celebration, hosted by Chancellor J. Keith Motley on Thursday, April 30, a pilot database of faculty research was unveiled, and Prof. Mary Oleskiewicz, who has worked extensively in Berlin with 18th-century manuscripts, and Prof. Lynnell Thomas, who studies New Orleans tourism, shared their recent research on the histories and cultures of two cities.

The CLI can host up to 50 people and comes equipped with projector screen, personal computer, and podium for lectures and presentations. Room also comes equipped with 22 personal computers, a total of 45 chairs, and five workshop tables that can be reconfigured for classes and presentations with the permission of library administration.

The CLI, located in room 015 on the 4th floor of Healey Library, is used primarily by Healey’s reference-instruction librarians to conduct library and research related instructional sessions customized to subject content of any UMB course. Sessions make extensive use of interactive/hands-on teaching and learning methods, multimedia, and electronic source materials.

Getting Published: Expanding Your Audience

In this research challenge a UMB professor who has published articles in the Journal of Business Ethics is now looking for new journals for his current research papers. The professor specializes (among other areas) in scholarship focused at the intersection of Chinese and Western business ethics. At this time he is looking for new venues to reach different and wider audiences with his scholarship. He asked for library suggestions for ways to identify journals that might be interested in articles covering Confucianism and business ethics.

What

Test scanning services are provided free of charge to any instructor at UMass Boston who elects to administer a test for an official class using the following answer sheet forms:

General Purpose NCS Pearson Answer sheet form no. 6703 (Green answer sheets)
General Purpose NCS Answer Sheet form no. 4521 (Blue answer sheets)
General Purpose Answer Sheet 229633 (Exam System II - Pink answer sheets)

Answer sheets should be available through the instructor’s departmental office.

Faculty evaluations The service scans faculty evaluations submitted by departments using one of the above answer sheets to administer course evaluations.

Who, and Where

The actual scanning of test results is provided by the staff in the Healey Library Reserves/Interlibrary Loan offices on the 4th floor of the Healey Library. Programming the equipment for the service is done by the IT programming staff.

When

Office hours for running the scans are from 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. For drop off of scans outside these hours please call the Interlibrary Loan/scanning office at 7-5912.

Cover Sheets Required

All scanning jobs should have a cover sheet appropriate for the answer sheets used. The sheet provides faculty name, course number, date, contact person if other than the faculty member, and contact information. Cover sheets may be copied from the PDFs below. They will also be available in the Reserves Processing office where you leave your answer sheets (shelf located across from the department photocopier).

Logging in using your last name and barcode, you can access from home, while you rest, any of our 75,000 electronic journals or 50,000 electronic books; or, for direct assistance, contact a reference librarian for research suggestions to help you stay on course with your term projects and assignments.

The Healey Library is offering a pilot database of faculty research - do check it out! Your general search terms will apply across the university; so, for example, searching the term ‘developmental’ brings up 54 articles from different colleges and departments at UMass Boston.

The pilot database links to the COS service, so you can follow this image to learn more about a researcher or colleague.

Zotero

Zotero is a Firefox browser extension that lets you collect, manage, and cite a multitude of resources while surfing the Internet. Zotero "senses" citation information available in a website, PDF, book, article, or other web object, and allows you to save this information with one quick click. You can than add additional notes or tags to the captured information. In this way, you can gather research from many different sources, keep it organized, and then export right into Microsoft Word (or another word processor) when you are ready to type your paper.
