These photographs were donated to the Archives and Special Collections Department of the Healey Library at the University of Massachusetts Boston Library by Anthony Sammarco in 2005.

History

The photographs document the construction of the first Boston Harbor tunnel, later called the Sumner Tunnel. The tunnel was constructed to handle automobile traffic from the North End of Boston to East Boston. The tunnel opened in 1935.

Scope and Content

The 64 black and white photographs are backed with linen to be kept in a three ring binder.  All of the photographs are labeled with information about the exact location in the North End/Haymarket Square neighborhood and the work being done.  They are all dated.  The creator of the photographs is not known. Also included are three parcel maps with corresponding lists of property taken for “Haymarket Square Improvement”.
