Boston State College Collection, 1900-1982
Quantity10 file boxes, 2 half file boxes, 4 newspaper boxes, 12 linear feet of publications
Scope and Content
The BSC Collection has been organized by department or function, regardless of the institution's name at the time, within the following categories: administration, curricular material [which includes items from academic departments], faculty [outside the classroom], students and alumni, and other. None of the material in this collection came directly from a department or office; the arrangement was imposed by the archivist. An index of departments, functions, and many publication titles appears at the end of the inventory.
This collection consists of publications such as catalogs, yearbooks, newspapers, student handbooks, brochures, commencement programs and newsletters; printed reports, and handbooks that were distributed throughout the campus or for a particular event; and archival material such as reports, correspondence, collected clippings, and scrapbooks. Most of the collection dates from after 1952, when the school become a state college. There is very little material dating from the Boston Normal School days, and only slightly more after 1924. The folders are numbered consequentially within each of the 5 sections.
Although the Self-Government Association scrapbook (1924-33) contains a number of photographs, almost all BSC and predecessor institution photographs are in Collection: 59.
The Archives and Special Collections Department also has master's theses (1926-1970). They are shelved by year and then by author. There are no indexes.
