Max Bluestone (Ph.D. Harvard University, 1959), became an Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1965 as a member of the University's founding faculty. Through his committee work, MB was directly involved in policy decisions that concerned not only the English department but also the University as a whole. A Shakespeare scholar, MB was also an active writer, editor, and composition teacher.

Scope and Content

This collection includes committee minutes, working papers, reports, notes, articles by and edited by MB, correspondence, publications, etc. Most of the papers provide information about the first twelve years of UMB, including such matters as curriculum, the evolving structure of the University, faculty tenure, and the choice of a permanent site for the campus. There is some material about MB's scholarly work and his stand on social issues, particularly the Vietnam War.
