Provenance

This research material was given to the University of Massachusetts/Boston Archives by Henry Norr in February 1986.

Biography

Henry Norr was involved in the Boston Office of the Indochina Peace Campaign from 1972 through 1975. He collected material from the IPC, the Indochina Resource Center (Washington, D.C.), Bread and Roses, campus organizations and foreign and U.S. small presses.

Scope and Content

Henry Norr's collection consists primarily of Vietnam history sources including newsletters, clippings, pamphlets, booklets, broadsides, peace treaty proposals, and a few periodicals that document the activities of United States armed forces in Indochina and of anti-war activities in the U.S., as well as the social conditions and philosophies of people and leaders in North and South Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. There are short books, translated into English, published by Foreign Languages Publishing House in Hanoi, Neo Lao Haksat, Giai Phong Publishing House, and by other presses in North and South Vietnam. The collection also includes runs of the Indochina Resource Center's Indochina Chronicle, and of Thoi-Bao Ga.

This collection also includes newsletters, pamphlets, booklets, and a few broadsides and periodicals that provide information about the radical labor movement, women's liberation movement, and working women in the United States in the 1970s. There is some material from Massachusetts, including issues of The Red Pencil (published by a radical teachers group), and booklets about working and learning conditions at Harvard and Brown universities.

Issues of the IPC's Between the Lines were removed from this collection and added to the Indochina Peace Campaign's collection (see Archives 014). Many books published in the United States were removed from this collection and added to the library's general collection.

Researchers interested in additional books published in Vietnam, mostly in Vietnamese, should speak to the archivist.
