Circulation Policies and Procedures
Eligibility for Healey Library Services
Any one of the following identification is required to borrow Healey library material:
- UMB student ID with a current validation sticker.
- UMB current faculty or staff ID.
- UMB special borrower's card and any other picture ID.
- Boston Library Consortium card and picture ID.
- Fenway Library Consortium member with current school ID.
- Retired UMB staff and faculty.
- Members of the UMB Alumni Association with current Alumni card.
- Massachusetts Public Colleges and Universities staff, faculty or students with current school identification.
The use of books, journals, databases within the library is unrestricted and free. If you have any questions please contact the Circulation Desk at 617-287-5900.

Loan Periods and Renewals
- Faculty, staff: 120 days with a maximun of four 120-day renewals.
- Graduate students: 60 days with a maximum of four 60-day renewals.
- Undergraduates : 30 days with a maximum of four 30-day renewals.
- All others : 30 days with a maximum of four 30-day renewals.
- Please note: The renewal policy is dependent upon your expiration date.
After the 4th renewal, books must be returned and reshelved in the stacks before the original user can charge them out again.
Overdue Fines and Fees / Circulating Materials
- $0.25 cents a day per item. Fines begin accumulating on the first day overdue. (Maximum fine: $10).
- When a $10 fine is reached (on the 40th day overdue), the user is also billed a $15 processing fee and a book replacement fee. The book replacement charge is based upon the actual cost to the Library to replace the book. Please note, this policy relates to Healey Library books only.
- There is a 7 day grace period for all Healey books, if a book is returned or renewed within 7 days of the due date, no fines will be charged. On the 8th day from the due date, the fine starts at $2.00 and maxes out at $10.00.
Faculity and staff are not charged fines for any material owened by Healey Library.
A fine in excess of $10.00 blocks the borrowing and renewal privileges for all users for all materials.
All users that borrow InterLibrary Loan books are subject to the fine policy.
Overdue InterLibrary Loan Materials
The overdue policy for Interlibrary Loan books is being developed at this time. If you have any questions related to an overdue InterLibrary Loan book please call the InterLibrary Loan Department at 617-287-5912.
Virtual Catalog Loan Policies
- Loan Period: 28 Days.
- Renewals: Are Not Permitted. Sorry
- Limits: 25 items.
- Fines: $0.25/day.
- Maximum overdue fine is $10 plus a $15 processing fee Book replacement cost is determined by the lending Library.
Overdue Notices
A "courtesy notice" is sent out 4-7 days prior to the due date, to alert you that it's nearing time to return borrowed materials. Once the due date has passed, two overdue notices are sent:
- On the 1st day overdue.
- On the 40th day overdue (the overdue fine has reached the $10 maximum). This second notice also serves as a bill for book replacement and processing fees.
Holds
Any user may place a hold on any book that is charged out to another user. Once that book is returned, it will be held for you to pick up.
Please note: you may not place a hold on a book that is listed in the catalog with status "available". You must come to the Library to check out that book.
To place a book on hold using a computer:
- Point your browser at the Healey Library Catalog and look up the book.
- Confirm that the book is charged out, and is not "available".
- Click the PLACE A HOLD button and follow the instructions provided.
- When the book is returned, a notice is sent to you indicating that the book has been returned and is available for pick up at the Circulation desk.
To place a book on hold in person, simply go to the Circulation or Reference desk and request to have a staff person show you the procedure for placing a hold.
