PROVENANCE
Sandy Schaeffer Ung donated these records to the Archives and Special
Collections Department of the Healey Library at the University of Massachusetts
Boston in July of 2000.
HISTORY
The first WAC chapter was established by a small group of women in New
York City in 1991. These women were fed up with increasing violence against
women, steady deterioration of women’s rights, and the national and international
backlash against decades of progress by the feminist movement. Two events
in particular, the Clarence Thomas hearings and the William Kennedy Smith
rape trial galvanized feminist activists to organize visible public actions
against those institutions and people who attempt to keep women oppressed
and powerless in our society. In addition to Boston and New York, there
existed chapters in Western Massachusetts, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston
and Los Angeles.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The records span the time period of 1992-1994 and have been organized
into four series. The first series, meetings contain notes and agendas
for the current meetings and they are organized chronologically. The
second series is Judgewatch, detailing actions, survey mailings, and correspondence
of WAC, as it sought to bring awareness change to violations of women’s
rights within the legal system. The third series consists of informational
handouts and reference materials, and the last series are subject files
consisting of: WAC mission statement, organization history, phone trees,
Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (anti-nuclear race/first
strike material), and an extensive list of women missing from history.
