The collection includes journals, and music and ration books from Cowles' first tour. Also included are miscellaneous papers relating to his military service and personal affairs. Additionally, there are photographs, medals, and sewing and portable writing kits

Biographical Note: William A. Cowles, a Dorchester (Mass.) resident, served twice in the 42nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. The first tour was for a nine month period in New Orlelans during 1862 and 1863
